INTERVIEW WITH TAMARA BLAGOJEVIC, DIRECTOR OF THE BELGRADE YOUTH OFFICE

What is the importance of having such a festival for Belgrade, for young people in Serbia and for people with disabilities?

This festival shows certain ambition, enthusiasm and great energy. Such ambition shows us only one thing - that today, all young people of Belgrade are characterized by the same desire to be creative and to prove themselves. The desire of young people with disabilities, because of their specificity, is only larger and more visible. On the other hand, through the film, we would like to show to the general public, what matters is what is inside of us and to bring closer a person who has a disability to a society as a whole.

Today, the biggest problem among young people is passivity and lack of motivation. What is the position of young people with disabilities?

Young people with disabilities, at least the majority of them, have the motivation and desire to improve. This festival is just one piece of evidence. Disabled people are very willing to be employed, especially young people from 19 to 24 years old, but that is prevented by obsolete educational system with special schools offering professions for which there is no need in the labor market. For them, the world did not stop, most of them feel they do not want to give up, and we all have to recognize that. So far, in Belgrade in all primary and secondary schools, that have made a claim, wheelchair ramps are built, railings for children with impaired movement and toilets are adapted for people with disabilities.  It also organizes free computer and foreing languages courses, while 120 persons with disabilities were employed in public enterprises. I shall use this opportunity to draw attention to the problems that young people, as well as people with disabilities in Serbia and in Belgrade have. We call on all institutions to help, so together we can do something  in solving them.

What are the most common prejudices you meet when it comes to people with disabilities?

The latest research shows that discrimination against these groups of young people is still here, but to a lesser degree then before. I would say, there are people who feel some sort of hostilities or others who feel pity for them. I think that's wrong. You should get to know some of them and you would see that they do not like to be seen differently or pitied, as that attitude createa even bigger gap. This festival is the way to reduce that gap so that someone who did not get a chance to get to know them, could learn how they think, who they are, after all, their desires, dreams and what motivates them.

Today young people are overwhelmed, via most media channels,  with so-called cheap entertainment. How this kind of festival can help them learn that life is not only false glamour and splendor of what they are being served, but it is full of heroes who by their own example prove that it is possible to cope with all the obstacles in life?

We at Belgrade Youth Office are trying to offer them more of value content. It is very difficult today, beside the existing system of values, to prove to young people that "life is not gold that glitters"  and that only someone who has an aim and is willing to work for, who is persistent in its intent, can achieve success, but it seems to me that the awareness of young people is changing slowly, for the better. Therefore, it is just up to us toshow them what the true values are, and how we should live without discriminating anyone.

Interview with Lisa Pram co-author of Chromosome 5

BOSIFEST 2013 GRAND PRIX was awarded to the film Chromosome 5 (filmmaker: Maria Ripoll & Lisa Pram, 2013, Spain). This is story of loss and encounter. Andrea loses a small part of her chromosome 5, but her mother has to find a new way of seeing and accepting.

Where did the idea to make this film come from? Why did you choose Andrea and her mother as the main characters of your film? Maria and Andrea and I met at the entrance of school and Maria noticed Andrea´s different ways/allure. We inmediately started talking and getting to know each other. At one point I gave her my diary to read and the doc-film is based on this diary. Andrea is the main character because she is Irreplaceable, special, beautiful and a great actor that loves to work in film and also photo-shootings.

You have taken part in numerous festivals around the world. What were the reactions of the audience?
Strong emotional feedback. We are very happy and thankful to get the story out there and the reactions are positive and great.
